History of Maliakei Bags
I began sewing early on, with the help of my mother, making doll clothes from recycled fabric. Later on, I made my own school clothes - mostly wrap-around skirts, dresses, and blouses.
In the mid 90s, I also taught myself how to make hair scrunchies - wore them to school, and used for work and leisure. Everyone loved the different colors and fabrics! Many were given away as gifts to special friends and family.
In the early 2000s, one of the local rock and mineral clubs needed drawstring bags. Shortly after joining, I began sewing hundreds of mini-bags which were filled with polished stones and other minerals for the club to sell at their annual gem shows.
Now I belong to 3 different lapidary clubs, and have sewn and donated thousands of mini-drawstring "educational" rock bags for everyone of all ages to enjoy. Sizes ranging from 4 x 6, 5 x 7, to 6 x 8 inch bags.
Since 2005, I've lived on the Big Island of Hawaii, traveling frequently to the U.S. mainland. Already, I have sewn dozens of beautiful and unique bags, mostly with Hawaiian print fabric. Everyone loves the tropical designs!
Many of the durable and long-lasting hand-made bags (and the bag's carrying handles) are double-stitched, and are inner-lined with burlap, cotton, and denim. All of my products are Handmade in USA.
